Supporting Crystal’s Growth and Communication
Since moving into Willow House, Crystal has developed strong, trusting relationships with her team. By taking time to understand her communication style, colleagues have empowered her to have choice and control over her daily life. Consistency and patience have been key, and it’s meant that Crystal feels safe and understood around her team.
While she uses limited verbal communication, she has built strong connections with colleagues who take the time to understand her. By copying her sounds and working closely with her on a one-to-one basis, the team has helped her develop new ways to express herself.
Crystal can now say words such as: “Mum”, “Home” and her siblings’ names. When asked what she likes, Crystal said “butter,” which we now know Crystal uses to communicate her food needs. She has even started combining words, saying “More butter” to show she would like more food, which is an incredible step forward.
She also uses sounds to identify people, such as making a “P” sound for Penny (Deputy Manager) and saying “Tash.” (Registered Manager). These moments are hugely meaningful, and some have even been captured on video and shared with her family, who are very proud.
By taking the time to understand how she communicates, the team has supported her in expressing her preferences, making a real difference in her daily life. The team celebrates every success with enthusiasm, and Crystal feels proud when she is celebrated by her team. She knows she’s doing something amazing!
Crystal’s journey at Willow House is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through trusting relationships and encouragement. Her achievements are a celebration not only of her determination, but also the supportive environment around her.
