My job in social care: M's story

We’re shining a spotlight on M from one of our homes in Hampshire, who has reached a huge personal and professional milestone—getting a job in a care home for people with learning disabilities.

M has recently completed her training, received her certificates and is now travelling independently by bus to and from work.

We sat down with M to hear all about her new role and how she’s finding this exciting chapter in her life.

Where do you work, M?
“I work as a Social Care Worker supporting people with learning disabilities in a residential home. It’s about an hour away from where I live, so I take the bus there and back every day.”

That’s a big step—how are you finding the travel?
“When I first moved to Ravenna, I couldn’t even get in a car without closing my eyes. It took me six months to feel ready to get on a bus. Now, I wait at the bus stop on my own and travel to work every day. I still feel a bit anxious, but I’m doing it—and I’m really proud of myself.”

How did it feel when you found out you got the job?
“It felt amazing! I’d applied for 140 jobs and had been to 35 interviews, so when I got this one, I was overjoyed. During the interview, I told them I was unable to work full-time,but the manager said they liked me so much they were happy to train me and offer me bank hours.”

You’ve already completed your training—how was that?
“I’ve done 40 hours of training, including safety interventions. I felt really happy to get my certificates. It helped me understand the role of social care workers so much more. – and makes me appreciate the work that people do to support me at my home.’

What do you like most about your job?
“I love helping and supporting others. It feels really good to give back—especially because I’ve received that kind of care myself. Being kind and caring can really change people’s lives and how they see things. I know it’s making a difference.”

How’s it going so far?
“I’m getting on fine. I’ve had good feedback and if there’s anything I find difficult, I ask for help and people are really supportive.”

What advice would you give someone else who wants a job like yours?
“100%—just give it a go. You need to know how it feels to care for others. The way you treat people really makes a difference to their life.”
