Sean Akins: Finalist at the Great British Care Awards

We’re thrilled to announce that Sean Akins, Senior Social Care Worker at Ravenna Lodge, has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Care Home Newcomer Award at the Great British Care Awards 2026. 

The award celebrates people who have made an exceptional impact early in their social care career, recognising those who have quickly demonstrated dedication and a commitment to making a real difference to the lives of the people they support. 

Sean joined Choice Care in 2024, having never previously worked in social care. In less than two years, he has made an extraordinary impact, becoming a valued and trusted member of the team and showing just how much difference one person can make when they are determined to help others achieve their goals. 

From the moment Sean joined Choice Care, he has put the people he supports at the heart of everything he does. He takes the time to understand their aspirations and interests; then finds creative ways to help make those goals achievable. Rather than asking, “Why?”, Sean asks, “How can we make it happen?” This approach has helped the people Sean supports experience opportunities that may once have seemed out of reach. 

When one person wanted to join a football team, Sean researched local clubs and adjusted his own availability so they could attend training. He even joined in himself, helping the person to feel more confident and comfortable. When another person wanted to go on holiday after years without one, Sean organised and supported them on a week-long caravan trip. He helped with the planning and supported the person to overcome anxieties around swimming. The experience was such a positive one that they are now hoping to take their first holiday abroad, with Sean supporting them. Sean has also supported another person to achieve their ambition of performing as a busker in the local area, while helping others explore employment opportunities by supporting them with CV writing and attending interviews. 

For Sean, it’s about much more than supporting people with their day-to-day lives. He helps people believe in themselves and try new things that matter to them. It’s clear that this approach has built an incredible level of trust. The people Sean supports regularly ask when he is working and specifically request his support. 

Sean’s positive influence also extends to his colleagues. He warmly welcomes new team members and takes the time to mentor and support them, helping others to feel confident as they begin their own careers in social care.
