Celebrating Learning Disability Week 2026
Learning Disability Week is a time to celebrate the people we support with learning disabilities. It is an opportunity to share stories that highlight the importance of support and inclusion. We spoke to Tom, someone we support, who is an Expert Quality Auditor at Choice…
Feeling at home
“I feel at home where I live. One of the things I love most is that it is close to town, making it easy to get out and about. The house itself is a nice place to live, but what really makes it special are the people. I enjoy talking with my team, who are always supportive and friendly, and I get on really well with the other people who live here.”
Growing in confidence
“The team encourage me to try new things and support me to build my confidence. Knowing that people believe in me gives me the courage to step outside my comfort zone and take on new experiences.”
Leading a life I want to live
“I love getting out and about and doing what I love. Spending time with other the others and joining in with activities around the house is something I really enjoy.”
My achievements
“One achievement I am particularly proud of is my job as an Expert Quality Auditor. In this role, I help make sure that other homes are providing the right support for the people that live there. It is rewarding to know that my experiences and opinions can help improve the lives of others and ensure that people receive the support they deserve.”
Looking ahead
“When I think about the future, I am happy with what I am doing now. I enjoy my life, my work and the people around me. Rather than focusing too much on what is next, I prefer to appreciate the present and take each day as it comes.”
Learning Disability Week is about recognising the strengths and achievements of people with learning disabilities. Tom’s story highlights the importance of supportive relationships, and thriving in a place people can call home.
