Communities where everyone belongs: Nick's story
At Choice, we don’t just provide support, but take pride in building real connections and supportive communities. Whether it’s crossing the finish line of a half marathon or gaining new qualifications, Nick’s story is a reminder of what is possible when people are supported to be part of a positive and encouraging community.
We spoke to Nick about his experience taking part in the Swansea Half Marathon, and how his team supported him to train and race on the day…
Life with Choice Care
Nick moved into his own flat, with Care Without Compromise, in 2019 as an emergency placement due to his previous placement breaking down. Since moving in, he has loved his space at the flat and spoke to us about living with Care Without Compromise: “It’s really good living here. I live in my own flat, and love having my own freedom. Sometimes I find things difficult, but my team are always there to help me.”
The Swansea Half Marathon
Nick ran the Swansea Half Marathon for the third time this year. When we asked Nick about his experience, he said “I really enjoy running and find it a great way to socialise, as I love chatting to people. Although it is 13.1 miles long, the half marathon is also a great way to challenge myself and I enjoy running through the city centre.”
Crossing the finish line
“Crossing the finish line felt great! I was happy to know I didn’t have to run anymore, as I was tired.”
Being part of a community where I belong
Nick is a part of his local running club. When we asked him about it, he said “I am a member of Pontardawe running club, which I attend on Thursday evenings and take part in regular park runs. My care team take me to the half marathon each year and cheer me on as I am running, which makes me feel really motivated. They always meet me at the finish line, and I always feel proud once I meet them there.”
My achievements
At Choice, we take pride in celebrating the people we support and their achievements. When speaking to Nick’s team, they said “We are immensely proud of Nick and his dedication towards his running. This is a huge achievement, one of which we have no doubt we would not be capable of achieving ourselves.”
Nick has accomplished many of his personal goals, and spoke to us about his recent achievements. He said “I am proud that I have completed my food hygiene level 2 qualification, which led me to getting a job delivering for Uber Eats. I have passed my driving theory test and am learning to drive to pass my practical driving test. I am also very proud that I won Choice Got Talent 2024.”
My future
Nick has made some amazing progress and is excited for his future. He said “In the future, I would like to pass my practical driving test and get my full driver’s license. I would also like to train to be able to take part in the Ironman Triathlon Race.”
Nick’s journey with Care Without Compromise highlights the impact of his care team and the importance of having people around you who care, listen and encourage you to succeed. Being part of a community where everyone belongs has seen Nick gain confidence, learn new skills, and accomplish his goals.
