I was told only boys could be autistic

DATE: 03.09.2019

3 in every 4 people diagnosed with Autism in the UK are male, according to the latest official estimate from the National Autistic Society.

Jasmine Ghibli was diagnosed with autism at two years old in America. The diagnosis was taken away from her when she moved to Scotland after her GP decided she was the “wrong sex” to be autistic.

The discrepancy between male and female diagnoses is clear, and there is varying speculation as to why. Is it that a gender bias is still disadvantaging women in 2019 by active refusal to acknowledge their autistic traits, or common gendered misconceptions regarding behaviour ‘norms’ that causes this surely inaccurate margin?
