Choice Care Group Unveils Three New Developments
Specialist care provider Choice Care Group has completed work on new ‘annex’-style developments in the grounds of three existing homes, for service users with particular individual needs.
The Reading-based company, which operates 39 care homes for adults with learning difficulties and other complex needs in Berkshire, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Hampshire, has added another dimension to its care provision with the three new developments, each offering a greater degree of independence for service users, while still providing access to all the specialist care and support offered by their ‘sister’ homes. The design and layout of the home can also be set up on a bespoke basis, according to the resident’s needs.
Boxgrove Annex, in Tilehurst, Berkshire, is a bungalow in the grounds of the existing 10-bed main home. It is currently home to a man who has very specific physical and behavioural requirements and as such, required a bespoke living environment to be designed around his individual needs.
The bungalow has its own private garden that has been landscaped to be fully wheelchair accessible, as this is an area where the individual likes to spend most of his time. The en-suite bathroom is fitted with a ceiling tracker hoist and there are various pieces of assistive technology within the property, the aim of which is to promote independence and reduce this man’s reliance on staff.
Parkview Annex, also in Tilehurst, is a one-bedroom annex, designed to create an environment in which an individual can develop independent living skills in preparation for moving on to less supported accommodation. Currently, it is home to a young man who recently left school and is now embarking on the first stage of his care pathway in adult life.
Fritham Annex, in Southampton, is a three-bedroom, self-contained annex, specifically designed to support individuals who may have been in hospital or highly supported services to develop the coping skills that would enable them to move back towards more independent living.
As with all annex accommodation, the close proximity to the main house and the use of assistive technology offers a number of benefits to both the service user and those funding the placement as they are able to provide a cost-effective and consistent approach.
Choice director of referrals and new projects, Tracy Bridgman, said: “We are continually looking for new ways to support our service users, and believe these new annex developments provide us with an exciting opportunity to help individuals who need a bespoke living environment, or who would benefit from more independent living, but with the support of a care home environment close by.
“Since this individual moved into Boxgrove, the outcomes for him have been exceptional; his mobility and behaviour have improved significantly and he is clearly extremely happy!”
