Little Heath Court

The building of Little Heath Court – a bespoke service for young people with autism and/or complex needs to begin their transition to adult life and prepare for independent living – is now almost complete.

Now is the time for service users and their families to get involved in designing each flat-let so that it is bespoke to each young person’s needs, with assistive technology in place to help promote independent living skills.

Care and consideration is also being given to creating an overall environment that is safe, homely and autism-friendly.

Each service user has their own private patio garden with each room having lovely views of the surrounding countryside (with its resident horses). Being close to the local village of Tilehurst and the large town of Reading, the location is perfect for the young service users to build on their social networks and opportunities.

As is always the case, a great deal of planning has gone in to tailoring bespoke transition plans to help each individual in their move and the time spent doing this has resulted in them reacting very positively to the process, which of course has been a great relief to their families.

“My son has just moved into LHC from a 52-week residential school, where he was very happy.  I fought very hard to get him a placement at LHC because I was confident that the knowledge and expertise in autism by the Choice staff was just what my son needed to guide him through his adult life, this coupled with the beautiful residential building in a lovely country setting offered Chris the space he needs with the 24 hour support he needs to become as independent as he can and develop into a fully functioning member of the community.

Together with Choice staff and Chris’ school staff at MacIntyre we put together a very comprehensive transition plan, which has provided the vital framework for Chris’ move to LHC.  We have been touched by the willingness of the staff to work with us and the loving way that they have embraced Chris into his new home.  He has a weekly timetable of activities to develop his skills in daily living and allowing him to take part in the community and enjoy his favourite activities.  We could not be happier with the choice we have made for our son”.
